Guessing what’s gonna happen in the future is like trying to predict the weather — tricky business! The AI scene moves faster than a dark cloud inside a hurricane, in this industry one day feels like one month of innovation. Despite the uncertainty, I’m gonna throw out some ideas about what AI and Creativity might be up to in 2024. Anyways, we will need to wait. We’ll have a good laugh in 2025 when we see if I got anything right, or not, but please, don’t judge me — I will try my best.

2023 marked the year zero for AI’s infiltration into the lives of many of us. Even GPTs got inside our lives in 2023. Tools like Midjourney and Runway are reshaping the creative landscape, turning individuals into big production powerhouses. Suddenly, storytellers found themselves armed with a new ally, a tool that could breathe life into their narratives.

This new era of AI-assisted filmmaking is not just a trend but a paradigm shift, offering unprecedented tools and techniques that are reshaping how movies are made, and the whole creative industry.

I have been a designer for more than fifteen years now, I also do music, street photography and other stuff — but surprisingly, I even found myself becoming an AI film director in 2023 — how fancy and crazy is that? It’s something I’d never have imagined. (You can check out my AI movies here if you want to.) With this unexpected journey on my way, I’m looking into an algorithmic crystal ball to share my predictions for how AI will further impact and transform the creative industry in 2024. Here we go:

Improved user experience and accessibility: AI-powered creativity tools will become more widely accessible, affordable, and user-friendly, making them accessible to a broader range of artists and creative professionals. This democratization of AI tools will democratize creative expression and empower individuals to explore their artistic potential. AI art is still art, it’s just a different kind of art. Haters gonna hate. Lovers gonna love. That’s OK. Life goes on.

AI Will Enhance Video Production: AI will revolutionize video production, automating tasks like background removal, object tracking, and color correction. Storytellers now can also bring their vision to life creating full short movies just using AI! This will streamline the video production process and enable creators to focus on more creative aspects of filmmaking. Tools like Midjourney and Runway are already transforming the filmmaking process, their quality tends to evolve very fast, bringing more photorealistic results. Maybe we will see a boom of indie films coming soon. AI-powered video editing tools will emerge, allowing users to edit videos with natural language commands.

AI Mixed Workflows (AI + VFX + CGI): The integration of AI-Based Mixed Workflow with VFX and CGI marks a significant advancement in digital media. This combination enhances strengths like superior control and visual impact, although it does require a grasp of VFX composition techniques. Ideal for medium-sized studios and seasoned creators, its applications span indie films, concept research, commercials, and music videos, offering diverse and innovative possibilities in digital storytelling and production. Tools like ComfyUI will become more relevant, bringing more control to AI video and image creation. I think soon in Hollywood any director who wants to pitch a film to a studio will need to have some AI pilot or proof-of-concept. This will become the new normal for this industry. AI will be used more and more for VXF and combined with it.

AI-Driven Scriptwriting and Story Development: AI will increasingly play a role in scriptwriting and story development, offering suggestions for plot twists, character development, and dialogue. This technology could analyze successful scripts to provide insights on structure and pacing, helping writers craft more compelling narratives. Basically you come with your idea, and AI will help you develop it, not as a Dog, but as a co-pilot. Zero1cine for example launched a free GPT app called FilmmakerPRO that can help people create their own movies.

AI Will Personalize Experiences: AI may personalize user experiences across different products and services, making unique recommendations and combinations that match individual preferences and tastes. This will create a more immersive and engaging user experience for consumers and empower brands.

Advertisement agencies focused on AI: AI is a game-changer for ad agencies, significantly speeding up the creation of ideas, storyboards, and key visuals. This efficiency translates into considerable time and cost savings. Agencies benefit from quickly iterating and refining concepts, while clients get a glimpse of high-quality prototypes before fully investing in production. This synergy between AI’s rapid prototyping and creative expertise ensures both time and financial efficiency, making every ad campaign more effective and impactful. Preparing your internal team to be capable of using these tools can save your business time and money.

AI as a co-pilot for Artists: AI will not replace artists but rather become a powerful collaborative tool. AI models will assist artists in various stages of the creative process, from generating initial concepts and sketches to providing feedback and refinement suggestions. This synergy will lead to more innovative creations. Slowly more and more artists will understand how AI can boost their creativity and allow it to be part of their process.

(I hope) AI-Generated Music Will Finally Improve: AI-generated music will become more sophisticated and accessible, with AI models capable of producing original compositions, arranging tracks, editing, and more. This will expand the musical landscape and open up new possibilities for musicians and composers. Maybe we will listen to a music album totally made by AI that is indeed good to listen to, or we will not be able to tell the difference.

The Ethical Dilemma: As we venture into 2024, companies are increasingly facing an ethical dilemma in implementing and using AI. The core of this challenge lies in balancing technological advancement with ethical responsibility. On one hand, AI presents unparalleled opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and economic growth. However, it also raises significant concerns about privacy, data security, and the potential for bias in decision-making processes. Companies must navigate the fine line between leveraging AI for competitive advantage and ensuring they adhere to ethical standards that protect individual rights and societal values. This dilemma is compounded by the evolving regulatory landscape, as governments and international bodies are beginning to impose stricter guidelines on AI usage. Consequently, companies must invest not only in AI technology but also in frameworks that ensure its responsible and transparent application, considering the broader implications on society and individual freedoms.

In conclusion, the future of AI in the creative industry, particularly in image and video art generation, holds immense promise for innovation, collaboration, and accessibility. AI tools will empower artists, enhance creative experiences, and transform the landscape of artistic expression and media production. However, it is crucial to address ethical considerations and ensure that AI augments rather than replaces human creativity, understand how those models were trained, respect copyrights, and promote a safe use of these new technologies.
