Flourishing
Artwork inspired by Carl Jung theory of Individuation
All seeds have potential to become a flower, yet, not all of them will indeed flourish and become one — it will depend on different factors, internal and external, like the amount of water, quality of the soil, atmosphere, ability to incline towards the sun, and others. In the same way, we Humans are all born as seeds and not as flowers, we all have potential to become something unique, to unfold our potential, but not all of us will indeed flourish. Flourishing is a process that needs to be achieved and developed, it takes time, it demands energy, thinking, self exploration, self development, self knowledge and awareness of all our lights and shadows (our good and bad sides).
Other analogies can be found on this metaphor. The amount of water can be seen as our basic fuel, on what we chose to nourish ourselves, our individual source of energy, and how often we feed from it (our motivations, dreams, goals, places we like, things and people that makes us happy). The quality of the soil can be seen as the quality of the environment we are currently living our daily lives (our city, country, daily routine, house, even our bedroom). The atmosphere can be compared to our home and work environments, on which people we choose to be by our side, our friends, family and relationships.
Even knowing that the seed does not go to blossom in just one burst, the Culture of our post-modern society (where productivity is more rewarded than presence, where everything is fast and instantaneous) is not interested on the tedium and conflicts that arises from the flourishing process, but that’s exactly were all the magic unfolds — on exploring our unique path though the world and inside ourselves, on discovering and creating our unique and authentic individuality. Someone can have a huge talent to become a pianist, but it will never discover it if indeed not sit for years on the piano and patiently just practice it. Nature has an infinitely amount of beautiful flowers, in the same way there are infinitely kinds of beautiful lives to be lived, talents to be found and developed, paths to be discovered. We need to flourish ourselves.
